Off the water grid - building in Woodstock does its part for water conservation

Category Commercial Property News

Over the last few years, South Africa has been experiencing a severe drought with the Western Cape being one of the worst-hit areas in the country. The city of Cape Town came extremely close to running out of their water supply. This has forced the local government of the area to implement drastic water restrictions to try and alleviate this catastrophic problem. This has also forced normal citizens, business people and areas to do their part for water conservation to ensure that the city of Cape Town doesn't reach the dreaded day zero.

According to numerous news sources, a building in Woodstock has seen to this issue. They have become the master of their own destiny in terms of water. They have gone completely off the Cape Town water grid in order to save not only the environment but also become a shining example of innovation to the rest of the city. This has been made possible due to an underground mountain stream that has been running under a building in Woodstock for years. The building is called The District and now, it will propel the Woodstock suburb towards becoming a region of the city not just famous for its formidable office space and residential options but also for its positive contribution towards alleviating the water crisis of the Western Cape.

"The District obtains its water from naturally occurring underground mountain springs which flow to the building basement. For years this water has not been utilised and simply pumped into the City's storm-water system to flow into the sea and prevent flooding in the building". -Aimee Pace -2018

However it wasn't as easy as just accessing this water, there had to be a lot of work put in place that would enable a unique filtration system in the building that would make the water safe for human consumption. This coupled with the by in from existing tenants and other key stakeholders, made the dream of an in-house off-the-grid water supply achievable. The system is stored in the basement of the building.

"Its filtration plant is based in its own sterile glass-fronted room. This enables anyone to view the sump water being made into drinking water. The plant's filtration plant installation has also been designed to create a greater understanding and awareness about water. It is even labelled so that viewers can follow the process and learn how it works. Some 140,000 litres of water flow naturally through the sump each day, and the filtration plant has been designed to clean the entire flow.  ". -Aimee Pace -2018 (capetownetc.com/property/woodstock-building-goes-off-water-grid/)
